Useful Information
Kanlaya’s weather is typical of Thailand’s mountainous North West. The climate up here is sub-tropical, the terrain is mountainous, and the vegetation is deciduous rain forest. At an altitude of 2,500 feet, with peaks around rising to over 6,000 feet, we never experience the overwhelming heat and humidity of the coast and the lowlands.
Getting to Kanlaya's
Getting here is part of the adventure. Our location is remote, but we have good transport links that take you through beautiful scenery with the opportunity for stops en route.
Travel options include:
- By air to Mae Hong Son from Chiang Mai (CNX) 30 minutes twice daily and from Bangkok 4 days weekly
- By self-drive or chauffeur car from Chiang Mai
- By hourly air-con minibus
Health Matters
Always ask your doctor, but keep in mind the two biggest health risks by far in Thailand are carnage on the roads – the world’s second highest road mortality rates, and sunburn.
Where next?
Many of our visitors combine time in the cooler, remote, subtropical, tribal, mountainous north with Thailand’s hot tropical southern coastal resorts or another exotic location in South East Asia.
When to come
Peak season October to February, warm sunny days, cool to chilly starlit nights, little rain
Hot Season. March and April are the hottest months, dry, hot day and night, polluted by farm burning. But we have good aircon and free swimming in the river. Not recommended
Rainy or Green season, May to September. Much underrated, very green, intermittent intense storms drop the temperature, relaxed, uncrowded, good water for kayaking
